Welcome Aboard: First day of class

Before class begins – please complete the following:

1. Make a name card and learn a classmates’ name.
2. Check out a laptop if you did not bring your own.

PART ONE: INTRODUCTIONS

What do you need to know for the first day of class? You need to know what the class is about, who your instructor is, what materials you will need, and what you will be doing this semester. I’m going to briefly cover all of these things during today’s class.

What is this class about? It’s about learning to use technology effectively in your own life so that you can (and will) use it effectively in a K-12 classroom. You can view the syllabus for more of the fine print – but that’s the main idea of the course.

Who is your instructor? My name is YunJeong Chang, also go by Eunice. Currently, I am a doctoral candidate in Learning, Design, and Technology program at the University of Georgia. This is my third time to teach EDIT 2000 and I have co-taught several undergraduate and master level courses in UGA. I am originally from Korea (South Korea) but lived and visited many foreign countries including Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and several countries in Europe. Back in Korea, I was a college instructor as well as a researcher in medical education area. I believe it is important to use technology as an lifelong owners and learners.

What materials do you need? You’ll need access to technology – your own computer or one in a lab somewhere on campus. Headphones and a microphone are helpful. Mobile devices are even more helpful. You’ll need an open mind and a willingness to try things you thought you couldn’t do. You’ll need to be willing to think about issues in education, even though you might not be planning to teach in the traditional sense. You’ll also need to be able to work independently – as this is a fast-paced course that requires your full participation. That means sometimes having to figure out something on your own – rather than waiting to get the answer from me or a classmate.

What will you be doing this semester? You’ll be learning more about technology tools that you can use in your life now. Then, we’ll apply what you’ve learned to a K-12 classroom setting. All of this will be done through project-based learning. Don’t know what that is? I promise you will soon enough. You’ll be doing a lot of work, you won’t be bored, and you certainly won’t hear yourself saying, “when am I ever going to use this?”

PART II: SYLLABUS

Do you have any questions about the syllabus?  I will answer all your questions now.

Here are some questions from previous students.

  • Freedom–  The topics of the projects are totally up to you. You can be consistent with one topic throughout the whole semester. You can change from project to project.  You just need my approval for some projects.
  • Late Pass– how can you earn late passes?  There are several ways… Good works will help you earn one.  How many can you earn? You can ear as many as possible.  And how many can you use for one project?  You can use up to two for one personal individual project and only one late for group project.
  • And one thing I didn’t put in syllabus is about our communication.  I will ask you to provide your primary email account next week.  I use email as a main channel to communicate with my students.  However, please email me by 10 PM unless it’s an emergency.  Sometimes my students email me after midnight or in the morning and tell me that they need something for the course projects.  I am sorry that I can’t get it prepared for you in that case.
  • Another thing about email communication: I may not be fast in responding to your email.  But I like to let you know I get your message.  I usually will respond to you with a few words.  Therefore, if you don’t hear from me after 24 hours, please send me another email to check with me.
  • Sign-in Sheet:
    Starting from next week, you need to sign in when you come to class.  I will take away the sign-in sheet after 10 minutes.  If you are late more than 10 minutes, that counts as an absence.  If it is an emergency, you can talk to me after class

FOR THURSDAY:

  1. Complete the student information sheet and enrollment information sheet before the end of class.
  2. Read Chapter One from Howland,  J.L., Jonassen,D., & Marra, R.M. (2011). Meaningful learning with technology. (Fourth ed.). Boston, M.A. : Allyn. You can access it from our Readings folder. We are using Dropbox to organize our readings for this semester. You do not have to have a Dropbox account to view files in the folder or to download files.
  3. Be prepared to respond to these questions in class on Thursday: What was the big idea or takeaway you had from the Meaningful Learning with Technology chapter? Was there anything that surprised you?
  4. Find a really good picture that you want to use for your portfolio.
