EDIT 2000 focuses on creating teaching and learning environments using technology. We will design products for learning environments through numerous activities with various technologies.
To teach preservice teachers to use and manage technology in educational settings and to communicate means for using technology in educational settings.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Develop an exploratory, experimental approach to technology with a willingness to try new applications
Define various types of learning styles and strategies and explain how technology can support the needs of diverse learners
Operate available computer hardware and associated peripherals
Evaluate resources for their potential for achieving instructional objectives
Plan instruction that incorporates technology in appropriate ways
Use technology as a personal productivity tool
Recognize various implication for computer use in K-12 schools and other educational settings
Reflect on literature related to using technology in educational settings
Access, evaluate, and utilize online educational resources
Explain and give concrete examples of how all the technologies learned in this class can be used to enhance instruction and personal productivity
Create learning activities and products with the following software that will enhance instruction and personal productivity:
- Word processing software
- Spreadsheet software
- Presentation software
- Web development software
- Graphic design software
- Graphic organizer software
- Curriculum-specific software
Our classroom is not a regular computer lab. Instead of desktops, we now use laptop cart. We have 12 Macs and 12 PCs. Choose the system that you are comfortable with. Please pay attention to the followings:
- When you check in/ out a laptop, make sure you initial in the check-out binder.
- DO NOT remove any power cords from the cart. If you need power cord for the laptop you checked out, please let the instructor know and you will get one from the power cord bag in the laptop cart.
- If you forget to bring the power cord for your OWN laptop, you need to go to OIT to check out one. The cords belong to the laptops in the lab CAN NOT be checked out for your own laptop.
- Use the VELCRO to secure the correct power cord for each laptop in the cart.
- The data in the laptop WILL NOT be wiped. Therefore, please respect other users and do not change anything or download personal data.
- Since the data will not be wiped, it will be nice that you stay with the same one during this semester. It will also be a good chance for you to learn how to protect your online privacy. Remember to LOG OUT for the websites you use.
The common sense and manners your grandmother taught you
You are welcome to bring: your own laptop (must be charged), lunch, and enthusiasm for our class.
Throughout the semester we will discuss your progress in the course. This may be achieved through email, office appointments, and during class times. You are welcome to turn in assignments ahead of time for formative feedback. Please note that late work is not accepted. You will be given a “late pass” that may be used once during the semester.
You will be given sufficient class time to get started on assignments and ask questions. Just as other classes require you to complete research in the library or listen to language tapes, you may find it necessary to complete your work in a campus computer lab before or after class, or on weekends. Assignments are due at the beginning of class unless otherwise indicated.
**Resubmitting work: If you turn in an assignment on time and receive a grade below 80%, you may resubmit the assignment by the next class meeting after the assignment is returned to you. The highest grade you can receive on a resubmitted assignment is an 80%. The completed web-based portfolio and the final reflection are not eligible for resubmittal.
F: 59 or lower
Participation and attendance are worth 10% of your overall grade. However, 100% of your grade is affected when you do not attend class nor participate — as it will be difficult, if not impossible, to catch up on missed work. To miss scheduled demonstrations or discussions seriously compromises your learning.
You are permitted to miss two classes without penalty. If you miss three classes, the highest grade you can earn for this course is a 90%. Missing more than four classes may result in a WF for the semester. I do not wish to be in the position of judging whether an absence should be excused or not. If you miss class, for any reason, you will be marked absent and it will count against your participation and attendance grade.
Attendance will be taken during the first 10 minutes of class via a sign-in sheet. You will be counted absent if you sign in for another student. You will be counted absent if you leave class early (unless the entire class is dismissed). The course instructor reserves the right to assign a penalty to the participation and attendance grade for excessive tardiness.
* Use only on-task technology during class. I expect you to abstain from using technology to engage in non-class related activities during class, including checking email, using Facebook, texting, shopping, playing video games, etc.
LATE PASS POLICY
All students will have at least one opportunity to earn a “late pass”. Late passes can be used to submit an assignment up to 24 hours after the due date with no penalty. Only one late pass can be used for individual assignment. Late passes cannot be used for group projects or the final project. One late pass may be used to excuse an absence. Even if a student has multiple late passes, they cannot be used for multiple absences. Late passes cannot be used for group projects or the final project. Late passes expire on Thursday, Apr 9.
All academic work must meet the standards contained in “A Culture of Honesty.” Each student is responsible to inform themselves about those standards before performing any academic work.
